Things to Include in Your New Employee Training Process

Next week you’re introducing a handful of new employees to your team. Are you prepared to train and onboard them? Though your HR team may have provided you with a new hire training checklist covering all of your company’s training-related discussion points. But, does it really include everything your new employees need to know, including how to use your enterprise applications?

Making sure your new employees are fully onboard to the software they will be using constantly improves your employees’ productivity. Unfortunately, traditional user guides and support sites are not efficient at getting new employees up-to-speed on common software like Salesforce, Oracle, Netsuite, or Workday. Check out this list of things you should include in your new employee training process that will ensure you’re prepared to successfully train and onboard.

New Employee Training: Before Your New Hire’s First Day

Onboarding new employees to your enterprise applications require sufficient prep work. Before your new employee’s first day, you’ll want to ensure you do these things:

  • Configure their login and user account information.
  • Create an onboarding plan or agenda.
  • Review documentation and make updates.

For most, documentation can be difficult. One of the main challenges with software like Salesforce or Oracle is that the support documentation does not align to your specific process, requiring you to create your own support content.

Unfornatualy, maintaining up-to-date documentation can be tedious and for this reason, it’s not always a top conce3rn. Before a new hire’s first day is the perfect time to review your existing support documentation and make updates. While reviewing your documentation, consider these questions:

  • Have you updated or changed any process since the document was last reviewed?
  • Are your screenshots and navigational directions still accurate?
  • Have you introduced any new updates to the system?

New Employee’s First Day and After

Once you have ensured everything is up-to-date, it is time to greet your new employee. On their first day, make sure you:

  • Provide them with a training partner.
  • Teach the employee how to access help documents.
  • Review support options including helpful adoption tools, like letzNav.
  • Provide the employee with a step-by-step through some of their most common tasks.

Many employee onboarding programs make the mistake of having their employees practice on tasks they won’t actually be doing on a daily basis. Employees learn and retain more information if they can learn while completing the work they will actually be doing. Have the employee’s training partner walk the employee through each of their most common tasks and make sure the employee knows how to get help if needed.
